The Permanent Representative of Yemen to the United Nations, Ambassador Abdullah Al-Saadi, met today in New York, the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations to Yemen, Hans Grundberg.
Ambassador Al-Saadi expressed the Yemeni government’s welcome to appoint Grundberg as the new envoy to Yemen, to succeed the previous envoy, Martin Griffiths.
Ambassador Al-Saadi stressed the importance of continuing the efforts made during the past period, building on them, and applying pressure on the Houthi militias to accept the option of peace and to comply with the call of the United Nations Secretary-General for a comprehensive cease-fire without preconditions and to engage in the political process.
He affirmed the government’s keenness to achieve comprehensive and sustainable peace based on the terms of reference for the agreed political solution, its welcome and positive interaction with all peace initiatives and proposals, and its full support for the Special Envoy’s efforts aimed at resuming the political process and reaching a political solution that ends the war and the coup.
For his part, the UN envoy expressed his aspiration to work with the Yemeni government and continue efforts to end the war and achieve peace, stressing his commitment to the principle of transparency and impartiality as a mediator to advance the political process.
