According to the Panchang, the date of Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Ashwin month will start on 01 October 2021, Friday night at 11.03 pm. Indira Ekadashi fast will be observed on 02 October 2021, Saturday. Indira Ekadashi fast will be broken on the date of Dwadashi of Krishna Paksha of Ashwin month on 03rd October.

According to the legend, a long time ago there was a city named Mahishmati in Satyuga. The king of this place was Indrasen. Indrasen was a very efficient and majestic king. The king used to take care of the subjects like his own children. There was peace and happiness in his kingdom. King Indrasen was a great worshiper of Lord Vishnu. One day suddenly Narada Muni entered the meeting of King Indrasen. Narad ji had reached the king with his father’s message. The king’s father sent a message to Indrasen that due to some mistake in his previous life, he was in Yamaloka. In order to get rid of Yamalok, his son will have to observe a fast on Indira Ekadashi. So that they can get salvation.
Hearing this message from his father, King Indrasen requested Narad ji to tell about the greatness of Indira Ekadashi fast. Then Narad ji said that this Ekadashi date of Krishna Paksha of Ashwin month is called Indira Ekadashi. After performing Shradh for ancestors on Dashami day before Ekadashi, take a vow to observe Ekadashi fast. Worship Lord Vishnu on the day of Dwadashi after taking bath etc. After completing the rituals of Parana and charity etc., break the fast. Only then will the father attain salvation and he will get a place at the feet of Lord Shri Hari. According to Narad Muni, King Indrasen kept the fast of Indira Ekadashi. By whose virtue his father attained salvation and he went to Baikunth. Later, King Indrasen also received Baikunth after death due to the effect of the virtue of Indira Ekadashi.
