Mayors want to be notified at noon the day before power cuts, instead of 5 p.m.

Power cuts likely to occur this winter could have significant consequences, such as depriving hospitals of water, alerted this Tuesday, December 6 the Association of Mayors of France (AMF), which asks the government to warn elected officials at 12 p.m. the day before and not 5 p.m.

RTE: “To avoid possible cuts, we need a national mobilization”

“The notice period the day before at 5 p.m. (at best) currently planned will not allow for precise and appropriate communication with residents and our agents”assure the mayors in a press release.

The sequel after the ad

“An alert at 12 p.m. would be compatible with a minimum service objective, in particular for the school canteen, which at the same time the State is asking the municipalities to maintain”continues the association.

“Priority sites”

More seriously, according to the mayors, power cuts threaten the activity of water treatment and sanitation sites, “with major consequences for the inhabitants: hospitals without water, unusable fire hydrants, pollution of the sea and rivers by wastewater”. The AMF therefore calls for water treatment and sanitation sites to be classified “in priority sites”.

Teachers worried about possible power cuts in schools

Regarding the continuity of school education in primary and nursery schools, the mayors recall that the cuts “will mechanically cause the shutdown of alarm and fire-fighting systems, heating, computer servers, anti-intrusion systems, elevators, and sometimes the water supply”, requiring a number of precautions when reopening establishments. The AMF also calls for the integration of crèches in the list of priority sites.

In a separate press release, the association Intercommunalités de France also warned on Tuesday of the possibility “disorders on the water and sanitation networks, which may in particular lead to discharges of polluted water into nature”.
