The National Committee for Organic Agriculture (Cnab), which brings together all the players in French organic farming, has decided… in Normandy. Yes, he announced on July 11, the use of heated greenhouses in organic farming remains authorized. But no, farmers will still not be able to cultivate as they please: the marketing of fruits and vegetables grown in greenhouses (tomatoes, courgettes, etc.) concerned is prohibited between December 21 and April 30. “There can be no counter-seasonality in organic”, underlined the Minister of Agriculture Didier Guillaume. In addition, greenhouse heating will have to switch by 2025 to 100% renewable. The fuel tank is over.
The compromise satisfied the ministry and the FNSEA. But the slayers of “The hyperindustrialisation of organic” (associations, organic professionals, just like chef Olivier Rollinger) risk seeing their concerns materialize. Remember that a seasonal tomato in France arrives on the shelves in early July, not a month before. Since Cnab places the summer twenty days in advance, consumers can remind it, with its feet and its tote, of the reality of the seasons.
