Should we fall for the iPhone 12?

Particularly awaited, the iPhone 12 arrives this Friday, October 23. After confinement, Apple had fallen behind in the manufacture of its new annual iPhone, skipping its back-to-school keynote in mid-September, only to unveil it in mid-October as the very first of the brand to be compatible with the new networks. 5G.

Since then, pre-orders have exploded around the world, with more than 12 million pre-acquisitions according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, especially in China where 5G is already deployed. In Monaco – a much smaller scale -, where 5G is already available, the Monegasques told us to wait firmly for this iPhone 12 to take the plunge. With us, according to a Coverd study, half of the French have been seduced by its quality of photography, and plan to acquire it.

So, should we take the plunge? “The Obs” was able to test them. Verdict.

Design, screen, power … few differences

IPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12

In terms of design first of all, the differences are slight. The grip changes little (almost the same size) and, by far, difficult to distinguish the iPhone 12 from its predecessors. The nose above, we notice a more rectangular shape, with more marked angles and a straight edge, reminiscent of the old iPhone 4 and 5. Is it better or worse? Personally, I prefer the more rounded edge, in the tradition of the very first model. However, we appreciate the few grams gained (162 g for the iPhone 12, against 192 g for the 11 and 174 g for the X).

In terms of the screen, it’s always very beautiful, very large, very contrasting. Apple boasts of an even better quality, but sincerely difficult to perceive. In contrast, the new glass used is promised to be four times more resistant to falls (” but please don’t try », We are told) and better protected against scratches. What promises a more durable device for breakers.

In use, it is always very fluid, very fast, very efficient. The Bitten Apple promotes a chip capable of handling 11 trillion operations per second, but again, hard to see a real difference from what was already working well before. Perhaps once switched to 5G, the use will be impacted, but we were not able to try in the context of this test, and the new mobile network will take time before adequately covering the French territory. .

Argument No. 1 of this iPhone 12 falls apart. But not the second, and more expected with us: the camera. Rather the devices. The Mini and Classic versions of the iPhone 12 have two high-performance sensors on the back, with a larger shot, and better color management. Software technologies make it possible to take superb shots with just a touch, both of landscapes and portraits, when the weather is nice as when it is gray, well exposed or against the light.

The photo test

In this image, taken on the roof terrace of our premises in Paris without any adjustment, we see on the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro a better management of color varieties, with a more pronounced brightness.

It is all the more marked on this shot playing with the rays of the Sun. This marks the improvement in Apple’s smartphone since the iPhone X – released just three years ago.

But the biggest difference is in the dark environments: here in our auditorium with only one lamp on, the iPhone 12 captures the place much better. There is also a difference between the classic version 12 and the 12 Pro version, with more depth for the second. This better management is explained by the presence of a new Lidar sensor, allowing better management of the focus in the dark (but also opening the way to better augmented reality applications).

The iPhone 12 Pro also stands out with its third photo sensor on the back, offering x2 optical zoom. A particularly welcome option, to juggle between x0.5 to take advantage of a very wide angle, and x2 to capture far away.

So ?

The initial question remains: should we crack? And its subsidiary: if so, for which of the four versions?

Everything will depend on the starting point. For the owner of an iPhone X – like the author of these lines – or a previous model, then the switch to an iPhone 12 is accompanied by a lot of real novelties, especially in terms of photography. The quality is at the rendezvous in the latest Apple, even more in its “Pro” version.

For the owner of an iPhone 11, then only the obligation to use 5G could justify the purchase, in the face of slight innovations. And updating the system to iOS 14 offers enough revivals to extend life.

Finally, for someone who prefers smartphones with Google’s Android system, then the iPhone 12 can represent a good switch in the Apple universe (especially since the transfer of data from one to the other is easier at start-up). But, like everything changes, it is accompanied by frustrations on usage habits.
