The Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Dr. Najeeb Al-Awj emphasized the importance of enhancing the resilience of national institutions by directly dealing with legitimate institutions and providing the necessary support to them, and the need for a balance between the World Bank’s interventions in emergency support and long-term development support.
This came in the speech of Al-Awj via video communication at the beginning of the annual meetings of the World Bank Group, in which he also indicated the importance of the new bank portfolio investing in supporting the main economic sectors and infrastructure that would promote comprehensive economic growth in Yemen by creating job opportunities for youth. The unemployed during years of conflict, supporting the steadfastness of Yemeni women and raising their capabilities to participate in construction and reconstruction.
He touched upon the challenges that Yemen faces through recent floods, outbreaks of diseases and epidemics, and locust swarm attacks, which led to the deterioration of the economic, health and social situation and the expansion of the population below the poverty line to more than 70% of the Yemeni population.
The Minister of Planning also praised the rapid response of the World Bank Group in supporting Yemen to deal with combating locust swarms and the outbreak of the Corona epidemic, which contributed to strengthening the health sector and improving livelihoods in society .. He called on the President of the World Bank to reopen the bank office in the temporary capital of Aden.
He pointed out that countries suffering from fragility were affected by the effects of the Corona pandemic, which contributed to the deterioration of the economic and social situation in those regions and negatively affected the development path that was achieved in recent decades.
