Toyota Motor Corporation announced that it is developing a new hydrogen engine that will be installed in a racing vehicle designed on the Toyota Corolla Sport that will participate in competitive car racing under the banner of “ORC (ROOKIE Racing)”.

The racing vehicle is equipped with a 1.6-liter inline three-cylinder engine with a turbocharger that uses compressed hydrogen as a fuel source.

The vehicle will participate in the first race in the third round of the “Napak Fuji Super TEC 24 Hours” race, which will be held from May 21 to 23, in the “Super Taikyu” races series for 2021, which has the support of Hancock.

By equipping a hydrogen engine to the challenging motorsports environment, Toyota aims to contribute to a sustainable and prosperous society that allows freedom of movement for all.

At the same time, hydrogen engines generate energy through the combustion of hydrogen using fuel supply and injection systems that have been modified from other systems used in traditional gasoline engines, pointing out that hydrogen engines are environmentally friendly, as they do not produce carbon dioxide at all when in use. .

The combustion process in hydrogen engines takes place at a faster rate than conventional gasoline engines, resulting in a good response. While hydrogen engines have outstanding environmental performance, they also have the ability to take driving pleasure to new levels, including the sounds and vibration produced by vehicles equipped with petrol engines.

A distinguished march

Toyota has always been known for its distinguished career in innovation in engine technology, and for its continuous application and improvement of technologies through its participation in motorsports sports through its production vehicles.

The company’s latest achievement in this field was the launch of the “Yaris GR” vehicle last September. It intends to apply the safety technologies and knowledge it has accumulated through work on developing vehicles that rely on electric hydrogen fuel cells and promoting the “Mirai” vehicle.

The racing vehicle will be supplied with hydrogen fuel produced at the Fukushima Hydrogen Energy Research Facility located in Namie City, Fukushima Prefecture.

Toyota continues to enhance its efforts to reach carbon neutrality by promoting the use of hydrogen, by popularizing the concept of vehicles that rely on electric hydrogen fuel cells, and many other products that work with fuel cells.
